Listen to the Show here: ADHD – A new Mind for A New World

August 1, 2011
Guest: Cheryl Healey
Guest Website: The Gift of You

About the Show:
Why are so many sensitive children given a label of ADHD?  Why do the numbers keep increasing?  What can you as a parent do to help your child avoid this label and treat or avoid symptoms naturally?  Learn the big, complex picture of ADHD and how you can help these children whether you are a parent or a concerned individual.  The time is now to turn the tide for these kids.  The children will be glad you did and so will you!

Change Thrivers Tip by Cheryl Healy:
Sensitive children including ADHD and ADD kids have a higher sensory perception than norm. The can multi-task naturally and process more information which is suited to the exponentially increasing amount of information they are bombarded with.

Symptoms are mostly physical and usually a reaction to some kind of allergy. Allergies are extremely common in sensitive and ADHD children. They could be allergic to variety of things such as food preservatives, cleaning products, other chemicals and toxins.

You might like to check your children for three things:

  1. Food Allergies
  2. Leaky gut – a name used to describe intestinal or bowel hyperpermeability. Increased intestinal permeability begins with inflammation and irritation to the lining of the digestive tract. Over time, the intestinal lining begins to wear and break down. This forms large gaps between your intestinal cells which then allow toxins, pathogens, and undigested food particles to enter your bloodstream.
  3. Toxins

Tough Love from A Working Mother

3rd July 2011 in Parenting

What do working mothers worry about the most? It’s the kids of course. Whatever the setting, the question I get asked the most is “Will the kids be alright?” It’s made me realize that we tend to look at the glass half-empty rather than half-filled when it comes to blending work and family. We forget about all the benefits that we bring to our children when we work – and I’m not talking about the obvious financial benefits, although these of course shouldn’t be taken for granted.

About a year ago I remember getting a call from the school just as I was pulling up to the house after having driven 20 minutes to the school and 20 minutes back. “Mrs Brown-Quinn, your son asked us to call. He forgot his sports clothes. Can you come back to the school and drop them off? “ I was exasperated! I had already spent 40 minutes in aggressive weekday morning traffic. I replied, “Sorry, I’m working at the moment. I’m afraid my son needs to learn to be organized.” Ouch. Yes, that was tough to do, but I resented that my son thought my sole purpose in life was to be at his every beck and call.

So today, about a year later, the school called me again. This time my son got on the phone. “Mom, I’m really sorry but I forgot my sports clothes. Do you think you could possibly drop them off for me?” His voice was genuinely sweet and unassuming. I decided to say yes. I had some flexibility in my schedule and more importantly, my son had the right attitude – he wasn’t assuming anything. When I arrived at the school and took the bag to the main office, the school secretary explained that my son had been very reluctant to call me. He told her that I don’t do that sort of thing – if he forgets something, I won’t come back to the school to drop it off.

Being a good parent requires delivering tough love sometimes. Kids need to learn to be independent. It can be a cruel and competitive world out there. Pursuing interests, including business, outside of your kids, can give you that extra perspective you need not overwhelm your kids with attention (dare I say spoil?). This benefit of working isn’t always immediately evident.

It wasn’t until our daughter went away to college that she realized why we (a dual career couple) had raised her in the way that we did. “Mom, I can’t believe how so many of my friends struggle to manage things on their own. They are constantly calling their parents for help.” You’ll love that moment! After all those years of complaining about why you don’t do this or why you don’t give them that, your kids have a “light bulb moment” and they realize that tough love has made them better people. Like many working mothers, I don’t have time to smother our kids, but this has turned out to be one of life’s blessings.

Yesterday, you worried about skinned knees, strangers, and ambulances. Today, it’s purple hair, drugs, apathy, and unfulfilled dreams. C. Delene Cole, M.S. www.DeleneCole.com, Certified Family Life Educator, Registered Marriage and Family Therapist, and Certified Parent Educator, chats with Change Thrivers parents about Taming Parental Anxieties while Parenting Teens on our next show.  If you’re experiencing the profound loss of your beautiful baby into a confrontational-driven teen, you may be ready to listen to Delene.

Delene specializes in healthy family relationships and healthy adolescent transitions. She has been teaching parenting classes and facilitating seminars for couples, individuals and adolescents for over fifteen years, and has been training and certifying new parenting instructors since 2000. Dedicated to helping families and teens in transition or crisis, she brings her relationship skills and lessons learned from her own five children to help our Change Thrivers families look at old conflicts in new ways -and find healing and resolution.  Delene says “Sometimes adults have more layers on top of them, and have forgotten that there is a field of possibilities with our teenagers. When conflicts and arguments are just repeating the same pattern, or destructive behaviors are involved; or if families are going through bereavement, divorce or blended family adjustments, those difficult transitions can be helped by family discussions using a heart centered approach.“

In fact, when it comes to families, Delene says “Normal is just a dial on the dryer. Parental anxieties (internal or externally imposed) turn up the heat and make it more difficult to stay present in our relationships with teenagers, causing parents to use a lot of different strategies to get what we want”.  So Mom, are you worrying constantly about your out-of-control teen? Are you spending nights waiting for the sound of your teenager coming through the front door?  Change Thriver parents looking for support on Taming Parental Anxieties can join Delene Cole and learn new connection skills on our next show.

We look forward to hearing Venita Garvin Valdez on Venita’s View.

7 Parenting Tips for Highly Sensitive Children

November 2nd, 2010 | Tags: , , , , , , ,
Posted in Blog, Children & Family | No Comments »
About 80% of children born today are highly sensitive “Psychic Kids”, with the mission to help transform our world. Change Thrivers Radio guests Andye Murphy and Gavin Harrill offered  a unique perspective to the whole family of these gifted children. We are all made up of energy and our energies have patterns that are reflected in our behaviors.

We discussed 3 types of energies; Indigo, Crystal and Rainbow. All people carry some degree of each type of energy but the characteristics are especially pronounced in some individuals where the predominant energy is Indigo, Crystal or Rainbow.

Indigo energy is fierce, intense, active and sometime destructive. Indigo people’s mission is to question the status quo and bring awareness to what is not working.

Crystal energy is gentle and highly sensitive. Crystal people are naturally in tune with the earth and are here to help us take a better care of our planet.

Rainbow energy is spiritually developed. Rainbow people have the ability to communicate beyond the 5 senses. They are leading us towards a more authentic life.

To effectively parent and educate these children:

1.     Listen — be open to what they’re sharing even    if you don’t believe it!
2.     Understand your child — learn how they perceive our world and process information.
3.     Trust their words and what they are seeing (experiencing) is true by embracing and listening.  As their parent, you NEED to validate their experiences — not tell them “they’re not real.”
4.     Talk about what is happening! — you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the reactions of others.  More children are having these experiences than those who are not.  Break the silence:  The more we talk about it, the easier it gets for all of us.
5.     Seek support and guidance — if feeling unable to embrace this part of them, then find resources who can support, encourage and empower them.
6.     Be honest These amazing kids and teens can read your energy as easily as watching television!!  You cannot hide your true energetic feelings, so don’t lie to them.  This only causes confusion and breeds distrust because they KNOW/SENSE you’re not being authentic.
7.     Lead by example — do the right thing.  Teach responsibility, compassion and honesty through your everyday actions.  Whether you’re aware or not:  YOU are their role model!

Andye and Gavin coach parents through these new occurrences in their home:  Answering questions, normalizing the situation, and explaining what is happening.  They coach the kids and teens by having candid conversations identifying their gifts and creating a safe space to explore them. :  www.PeeKSgroup.com
